Parenting is a serious and important job. It's also important that we choose to have only good people around our children. Thank you for sharing your wonderful story. From the day that I met you, I knew you had a big loving heart. It shows through. Love to you.the Domestic Goddesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07694080574390966405noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3092236862030297146.post-19847648091432068132011-09-23T12:32:33.026-04:002011-09-23T12:32:33.026-04:00A Simple Act

My dentist,Dr.Feula, was a gentle, caring, and patient man- someone who would explain what he was about to do and why. He was my dentist from the age of five until he passed away some thirty years later.
I distinctly remember two things as I nervously bided my time in the waiting room- flipping through the pages of the Highlights Magazines and a poster that was prominently displayed on the wall.Even at a young age,the poster, or what it said, struck a chord in me.
Now, if you know me, you know that my memory is not great- especially for events long past. The fact that this poster, or the essence of it, stuck with me all these years is amazing to me. Not long ago, in a conversation with my brother about our chilhood, he asked me if I remembered this poster.Even more recently, while shopping, I came across a plaque with the same words as this poster.
It made me start thinking about what affect the simple act of hanging that poster on a wall so many years ago may have had on other people. How many people had read it over the course of some thirty odd years? How many people stopped and thought about those words- made a vow to practice those values and ideals? How much of a difference did that poster make and to how many?
One man's simple act of hanging a poster on a wall. One woman's simple act of writing a poem...

Children Learn What They Live
If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemm...
If a child lives with hostility, he learns to fight...
If a child lives with fear, he learns to be apprehensive...
If a child lives with pity, he learns to feel sorry for himself...
If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy...
If a child lives with jealousy, he learns to feel guilt...
BUT
If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient...
If a child lives with encouragement, he learns to be confident...
If a child lives with praise, he learns to be appreciative...
If a child lives with acceptance, he learns to love...
If a child lives with honesty, he learns what truth is...
If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith in himself and those about him...
If a child lives with friendliness, he learns that the world is a nice place to live...
With What Is Your Child Living?

Dorothy Law Nolte (1959 version)Ginny Wyman Longonoreply@blogger.com
